Psychotherapy in Child Guidance
by Gordon Hamilton
A study of the social worker's role in psychotherapy at the Jewish Board of Guardians is presented in this volume. The book aims to describe treatment procedures that fuse social casework with psychoanalytically oriented psychiatry. A brief introduction and chapter on diagnosis are followed by descriptions of the nature and treatment of "the child who acts out his impulses," "the anxious child," and "the severely disturbed child." Direct or face to face treatment is analyzed and followed by a discussion of environmental therapy. Separate chapters are devoted to typical problems and treatment procedures in young children, the older child, the adolescent, and the family. The final chapter deals with the preparation of social workers for psychotherapy and the relationship of social workers to psychiatry. Briefcase illustrations are included throughout the text.
